Not only is today the last day in August, but it's the last day before a long, 3-day weekend.  And from today's show, you can tell we need it!

Jim conducted an experiment... just taking calls cold withoug letting Paulina perform her screening duties.  And we started a small controversy over just what the best love song is from the 70's.

Jim did take one serious call this morning, from Florida House Minority Leader Dan Gelber, about the DNC's threat to strip Florida of our delegates due to the January 19th primary date, as well as the Florida budget.

Have a great holiday weekend and we'll talk to you Tuesday!

On the heels of a great appearance by Barack Obama, we now have news of a South Florida fundraiser for Democracy for America Miami by another presidential candidate.  Congressman Dennis Kucinich will appear on Saturday, Sept. 8, beginning at 6:30 pm, at the Howard Johnson Plaza Miami Airport in Hialeah Gardens.  Tickets and more info are available at www.dfamiami.com.  Or stay tuned to the Jim DeFede Show between now and then, as we'll have tickets to give away!

This morning, Jim got a surprise call from Michael Albetta, president of the Florida GLBT Democratic Caucus, and vice-president of the Dolphin Democrats, who informed him that they had awarded Jim the Dolphin Media Award, for his coverage if issues concerning the GLBT community.

And Congressman Kendrick Meek, just off the plane returning home from Iraq, called in to the show to tell Jim and our listeners about the trip.

How do you spell hypocrite?  L-A-R-R-Y C-R-A-I-G.  Check out this video of the Senator from Idaho talking about Bill Clinton during the height of the witch hunt:

It was a busy morning.  Jim told us what happened in court yesterday during the custody battle over a 4 year old Cuban girl.  Her father wants to take her back to Cuba, but the foster parents who've cared for her here for the past 18 months and have adopted her older half-brother think it's in her best interest to keep her here with them.  Foster father Joe Cubas called in to speak with Jim this morning.  An hour later, following some very critical calls from listeners, the foster mother, Maria Cubas, also called in.

We're still following the situation surrounding Miami Police Chief John Timoney, who's come under considerable scrutiny since the story broke about his "loaner" luxury SUV.  This morning, Jim spoke with Timoney's predecessor, former Miami Police Chief Ken Harms, who said, among other things, that Timoney had displayed a "classic lack of ethics."

And finally, Mayor Carlos Alvarez called in to tell us about his meeting yesterday with baseball commissioner Bud Selig concerning the Orange Bowl as a possible site for a new Marlins' Stadium.
